I believe the bible is relevant to academic studies in many ways. The Christ-like character we show to our students stems from what we learn in the bible. At times academic studies can be tough and we turn to the bible for guidance. The wisdom and knowledge the bible tells us about is a gift from God. The Bible tells us that Solomon asked God for wisdom and it was given to him. In the same manner if we ask God for wisdom he will give it to us too.  There comes a point in our studies when we don’t know if the choices we are making in our studies are what God wants but we have faith that no matter what God will lead us in the right direction. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV). We hold on to the promise even in the tough times that God will take care of us because that’s what the bible says.

Even though the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about a certain subject it is meant to for all subjects. The reason we can understand academics is because we have the knowledge needed to understand. “Knowledge is both diverse and unified. From the beginning, the manifold dimensions of creation attest that knowledge is diverse. The character of the one true God and the fact that Jesus Christ is the glue that holds it all together attest that knowledge is unified” (Graham, 2003, p.190) He goes on to say that the academic disciplines are all a part of the concept that “sources of knowledge must interact”, this meaning that when you bring together the Bible, society, person and academics they all come together to create a curriculum. (Graham, 2003) Therefore, the Bible is very much relevant to the academic subjects we teach.

Yes I do believe the Bible is relevant to the subject that I teach.  Being a Health and Physical Education teacher, my main objective for the kids that I teach is to give them the true meaning of living a healthy lifestyle. In today’s society drugs,  alcohol,  obesity and the increase use of technology has made Health and Physical Education an even more important part of the school day. For some children it is the only opportunity they have to be active and to learn about their bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you,  whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price.  So glorify God in your body. The particular students I teach are currently living in a treatment center for children with mental health issues. As Graham states, Christian psychology is possible. We are purposeful and responsible for our own behavior. (Graham, 2003) I am able to teach my students with the knowledge and purpose of showing them that they are important in many ways and that attention to their health and physical fitness is paramount to knowing who God is. He wants us at our best. When we are active and healthy we are free to worship God without limits.
