Here are definitions of both management and leadership that I found interesting and very relevant to what these words mean.

Management- “A responsible manager is not limited to the ‘ecologist’ connotation perceived sometimes when sustainable development is evoked, but includes ethical notions of social responsibility and corporate social and environmental responsibility, sustainable development (in its entirety), long-term performance, socially responsible investments, equity, diversity, management in complexity” (Nonet, 2016, pg. 719)

Leadership- “It really became clear that being a leader meant being a skilled practitioner of relationships,” he said. “Being able to be in authentic relationships and show up in a way that could be trusted and relied upon by other people.” (Prokopeak, 2018, pg. 34). I truly liked this definition of leadership.

In my opinion leadership and management are completely different. Although you must have leadership to be in management, not every leader is a manager. Leadership is seen in people in administration and management but it is also seen in people in general. I’ve seen leaders amongst nurses that I work with, I’ve seen it amongst NA’s, I’ve even seen in it in a group of people planning a party or project. There are people who just have or acquire these leadership skills throughout life. Anyone can be recognized as a leader no matter where they are or what situation they are in. I feel that leadership is more important than management. If you have a leadership than you don’t necessarily need management. If you have management though they have to have leadership skills or they will fail. I think that it is very important for novice nurses and administration to learn management skills and leadership. This is a very important skill to have in the field of healthcare. In any situation you may have or any skill set you are in you may have to take leadership, take charge, and when prepared it is a lot easier to handle and have good outcomes.

An example that I can think of as a leader that really doesn’t have anything to do with healthcare is Oprah Winfrey. I chose her because she fits the exact definition and criteria of a leader. She is authentic. She is able to gain the trust of people. She uses her story to help other people. She uses her knowledge and what she’s been through to motivate her and help her become a stronger leader. If she created a movement most of the country would follow her. Just some of the many traits of leadership!

Leadership is a quality of influencing people, so that the objectives are attained willingly and enthusiastically. It is not exactly same as management, as leadership is one of the major element of management. Management is a discipline of managing things in the best possible manner. It is the art or skill of getting the work done through and with others. One of the major difference between leadership and management, is management is for formal and organized group of people only, whereas leadership is for both formal and informal groups. The skill of leading a group of people and inspiring them towards a direction is known as Leadership. It is an interpersonal process which involves influencing a person or a group, to ensure achievement of objectives, willingly and enthusiastically.

It is not a lesson to be taught, but a quality which is possessed by only a few number of people. The person who owns this quality is known as a leader. A leader is someone who has many people following him, as their inspiration. Leadership is a virtue of leading people through encouraging them. Management is a process of managing the activities of the organization.

Leadership requires trust of followers on his/her leader. Unlike Management, which needs control of manager over its subordinates. Both management and leadership play and important role in the field of nursing. Leadership and Management are inseparable in nature, if there is management, there is leadership. In fact, the qualities of a manager require leadership skills to inspire their subordinate. In nursing, you can see both management and leadership. There is a manager in a department and a number of leaders who work with their teams in assisting the organization in the accomplishment of their goals.
